Obituary


Bertha Lillian (Worrel) Benjamin, 85, Moose Lake, died peacefully with her family by her side on Friday, May 4, 2018 in New Perspectives Senior Living, Barnum. She was born on August 23, 1932 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Joseph and Katie Worrel. She grew up in the Columbia Heights and Fridley areas and graduated from Columbia Heights High School. Bertha attained her accounting degree and worked at First National Bank in Minneapolis from 1949-1976. On February 24, 1951, Bertha married Donald Benjamin. They moved to New Brighton until 1976 when they moved to Forest Lake. Bertha worked for Forest Lake Hospital and for a private tax firm before working for Washington County in Stillwater. After retirement, Bertha and Donald traveled the United States and wintered in Fort Meyers, Louisiana, Texas, and California. During their travels, Bertha enjoyed working on genealogy and meeting relatives and friends. She enjoyed music, playing the organ and piano, gardening, boating, fishing, and sewing. Bertha truly loved her grandkids and was a wonderful caregiver to her brother, Herman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald in 2013; granddaughter: Katie Grindy; three siblings: Harold Worrel, Bessie Worrel, and Herman Worrel; and her parents: Joseph and Katie Worrel.
Bertha will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters: Sandy (Dan) Grindy of Moose Lake and Mary (Dale) Sanders of Brook Park; 6 grandchildren: Ben (Kayla) Grindy, Lyssey (Brian) Schlenker, Don (Christine) Sanders, Tim Sanders, Jeramie Sanders, and Phillip (Gianna) Sanders; and 12 Great Grandchildren: Eira Schlenker, McKayla, McKlane, Courtney, Justin, Allex, Lexy, Skyler, Seairra, Aaron, Phillip, and Peyton Sanders.
Graveside Services will be on Monday, May 14, 2018 at 1:00 PM at Sunset Cemetery, 2250 St. Anthony Blvd, Minneapolis, MN 55418.
