Bret Gary Cummings, 66, passed peacefully on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, in Moose Lake Village.  He was born on May 27, 1958, in Cloquet to Gary Cummings and Jean (Lekander) Saylor.  Bret grew up in Barnum and graduated from Barnum High School in 1976.  He attended Culinary School in Mankato graduating early to begin his career as a chef at the Edina County Club.  Bret liked watching sports, especially the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings. He had a passion for Chevy cars, the "old" country music and reading westerns.  He loved his children, grandchildren, and family. As each of his children grew up and started their careers, he talked about how proud he was of them. Growing up Kim and Brian looked up to their "big" brother. Bret never complained when they wanted to tag along, except for that one time, when Kim wanted to go to Grandma Marion's too.  From the very beginning Bret was Brian's "hero".  He gave monthly to St. Jude's to help children and their families thru tough times.   He will be remembered most for having a soft heart and a compassionate and kind soul.  He was a "quiet" man even around people he knew.  He was a courageous man who never complained even when he was hurting.  He always said good night to his mom and that he loved her.  His last words to her were "morning momma".

Bret was preceded in death by two uncles: Randy Lekander and Clayton Lekander; two aunts: Ann (Lekander) Mix and Dana Sunnaborg; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Bret will be missed by his three children: Justin (Ryanne) Cummings, Kyle Cummings and Anna (Matt) Cummings-Taylor; grandson: Noah Taylor;  granddaughter: Zoe Cummings; mom: Jean Saylor; dad: Gary (Jani) Cummings; sister: Kim (Steve) Appicelli; three brothers: Brian Cummings; Jason (Gila) Cummings; and Eric Cummings; nieces: Kaysee Olson and Jordan Appicelli; nephew: Joshua Cummings;  2 great nieces and 1 great nephew; 4 uncles, 2 aunts, and several cousins.

Bret's family would like to express their gratitude to Moose Lake Village for the respectful and compassionate care they provided during his stay with them, especially the NAR's.  Thank you also to St. Croix Hospice.
