Obituary

Darwin Swan Hammitt, 73, resident of Moose Lake, died peacefully with his wife, Jeanne, by his side in Sandstone Health Care Center on Thursday, January 20th, 2022. He was born on Cinco de Mayo, 1948 in Cloquet, MN to Ralph and Goldie (Paulson) Hammitt.

Darwin was raised in Barnum, graduating from Barnum High school in 1966. He spent a couple of years in the Twin Cities at a Votech School before enlisting in the United States Navy which he served honorably from 1968 – 1972. Upon his discharge from the military, Darwin spent three years studying at UWS. On January 27 th , 1973, Darwin married his wife, Jeanne Tschida, in Barnum. To their marriage, two sons were born: Josh and Jake. Darwin was an extremely talented, self-taught body man who worked for several different trucking companies: his passion was for working on semi-trucks. In his spare time, Darwin enjoyed reading about the Civil War and General George Patton. He loved listening to classic country music, gardening flowers, and canning the vegetables he grew himself.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Goldie.

Darwin's memory will live on through his wife of nearly of 49 years, Jeanne; sons, Josh (Haley) Hammitt and Jake (Terra Ojard) Hammitt; brothers, Curtis and Roger Hammitt; sister, Ardis Williams; grandchildren, Beau, Aubrey, and Kylli; and beloved grand-cat, Mouse Cop.

A Celebration of Life will be held this summer in honor of Darwin.
