Donald "Dick" Henry Gassert
Donald "Dick" Henry Gassert, 85, of Moose Lake, MN, passed away surrounded by his family on May 14, 2010 at the Mercy Health Care Center in Moose Lake. Dick was born on January 12, 1925 to John and Anna (Schmidt) Gassert in Moose Lake. He attended and graduated from Moose Lake High School and St. Thomas College. He married Elizabeth Gram on June 14, 1949 in Nashwauk, MN. Dick served in the US Army during WWII as a medic in the 20th Armored Division. Dick and his wife Bette lived their life in Moose Lake where they owned and operated the Red Owl grocery store until their retirement. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding his red scooter, reading, and provided transportation for Veterans for 15 years. Dick was the longest living parishioner of Holy Angels Catholic Church. He was a member of the American Legion, Moose Lake Historical Society and past Assistant Chief of the Moose Lake Fire Department.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Howard and Roger.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth "Bette", Moose Lake; sons David (Jan) Gassert, Kerrick, MN and Roger Gassert, Barnum, MN; daughters, Jane Gassert, Vadnais Heights, MN, Peggy (John) Van Allen, Delano, MN, Chris (Jeff) Gassert, Milwaukie, OR, Barbie (Steve) Johnson, Lakeville, MN, Patti (Bruce) Bong, Excelsior, MN; sister Dorothy Ruhr, Sartell, MN; 16 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
A gathering of friends and family was on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 from 5-7 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm in Holy Angels Catholic Church. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 11:00 am also in Holy Angels Catholic Church, Moose Lake. Full military honors were accorded by the Moose Lake American Legion. Memorials are preferred to the Holy Angels Catholic Church Construction Fund. Inurnment will be in Sunset Cemetery, Moose Lake.
