Edna "Eddie" J. Gavin-Pelkey

Edna "Eddie" J. Gavin-Pelkey, 79, Kettle River, died Monday, December 18, 2017 in St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth, MN.  She was born on May 5, 1938 in Evanston, Illinois to Caloway and Edna Gavin.  Eddie grew up in Evanston where she graduated from high school and was an avid equestrian.  She attended Abbott Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis and attained her RN degree.  Eddie later graduated from Metro State University in Minneapolis, MN with a Bachelors Degree in Nusrsing. Eddie continued her education by attaining her Master's Degree.  Eddie lived in South Minneapolis and worked at Abbott Northwestern for over 30 years and had a passion for working in the Mental Health field. She finished her nursing career at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids, MN. Eddie was known for helping people during their transitions in life when they needed a place to stay and would always open her door for them.  Even after 'retirement' she continued to work for Mercy Hospital Clinics in St. Paul in their mental health units.  In 1981, Eddie married Donald H. Pelkey of Maple Grove, MN.  Eddie and Don moved to Kettle River in 2003.  She had a tremendous love of animals, gardening, traveling, reading and writing.  Eddie was a "mystery buff' who also wrote mysteries and children's books.  She contributed to the local newspaper with her column "Escape with Eddie" and shared her many adventures and educated readers on experiences she had in everyday life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Pelkey.

Eddie will be lovingly remembered by her two sons: Robert (Ammy) Rasmussen of Burnsville and Randall (Patricia) Rasmussen of Richfield;  granddaughter: Erica Rasmussen of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; step children: Jeffery (Mary) Pelkey; Bruce Pelkey; Craig (Kimberly) Pelkey; Kirk Pelkey; and Liz Barra; brother: Caloway Gavin II; sister: Virginia Greene; and numerous step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many friends.

A Celebration of Eddie's Life is being held at Eddie and Don's home, 6111 County Road 6, Kettle River from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM on Saturday, May 5, 2018 which would have been her 80th birthday.
