Ellen Marie (Schauland) Malkovich

Ellen Marie (Schauland) Malkovich, 96, Duluth, died quietly with her family by her side on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at the Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton where she lived for the last year. She was born on January 17, 1914 in Holyoke to August and Anna Schauland. Ellen grew up in Nemadji and attended the Central School. She later attended Barnum High School graduating in 1931. Ellen attended UMD and attained her Bachelor's Degree and later worked at Miller's Cafe in Duluth. On September 3, 1940, Ellen married Peter Malkovich in Duluth. They lived in Louisiana until Peter was sent overseas while serving in the military and Ellen returned to Duluth. Ellen worked at the Duluth Public Library for many years until retiring in 1979. She had a great love for Duluth and passion for writing poetry which she often combined to create several wonderful poems about Duluth and its experiences. Ellen was a member of the Arrowhead Poetry Society and the League of Minnesota Poets. She also loved to read, do crosswords, collect stamps and coins, and travel.

Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Peter in 1962; three sisters: Katherine Olsen, Mildred Katalinich, and Margaret L. Swanson; two brothers: Herman Schauland and Charles Schauland; and three nephews: Walter Olsen, Jr.; George Olsen; and Arne Swanson.

She will be lovingly remembered by her brother: Richard (Gladys) Schauland of Marquette, MI: sister: Mabel Schauland of Duluth; a brother-in-law: Michael Malkovich of California; and 14 nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton for their special care given to Ellen during her stay.

Visitation was held from 12:00 until the 1:00 service on Thursday, January 21, 2010 in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake. Pastor John Sippola officiated. Spring Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery, Duluth.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred in Memory of Ellen to the Inter-Faith Care Center, 811 3rd St., Carlton, MN 55718.
