Elmer "Matt" Matthew
Elmer "Matt" Matthew, 89, Moose Lake died Sunday, November 30, 2008 in the VA Medical Center, Minneapolis. He was born on September 24, 1919 to Albert and Etta Matthew in Morrison, IL and later attended school in Fulton, IL. Elmer began working for Western Electric Telephone for 2 ½ years. On April 25, 1943, Elmer married Hannah Eskuri in Kettle River. He was drafted into the United States Air Force in 1943 and served until being Honorably Discharged in 1946 as a Veteran of WWII. Elmer worked as a printer for 18 years in the Minneapolis area and during this time lived in the Minneapolis and St. Paul areas until 1950 when he moved to Hopkins. From 1972 until 1978, Elmer owned and operated Karmel Korn Stores in Austin, Minneapolis, and St. Cloud. In 1975, Elmer moved to Clearwater until 1994 when they moved to Barnum Township. They later moved to Moose Lake. He attended Family Worship Church and later began attending Evangelical Covenant Church in Moose Lake. Elmer was very interested in the Covenant Church construction project and would often supervise the progress from his car while enjoying watching the crews work. Elmer had a lifelong love of music which he expressed through barber shop quartets, Autumn Voices, and playing his harmonica. He will also be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor.
Elmer was preceded in death by two brothers: Howard and Leonard and a sister: Lois Ross.
Elmer "Matt" will be survived by his loving wife, Hannah; four children: Dr. Albert "David" (Katherine) of Sartell; John of Moose Lake; Susie Allard of Minneapolis; and Paul (Cindy) of Brooklyn Park; 7 Grandchildren; 5 Great Grandchildren; sister: Evelyn Irion of Morrison, IL; a brother: Warren (Jeanine) Matthew of Ventura, CA and his extended church family whom loved Elmer "Matt" dearly.
Visitation was held from 10 AM until the 11 AM Service Thursday, December 4, 2008 in the Evangelical Covenant Church, Moose Lake. Pastor Todd Van Zee was the officiate.
