Obituary

Eugene Dallas Lourey

Eugene Dallas Lourey died unexpectedly October 12, 2008 at his home in Kerrick.        Gene was born October 6, 1941, in East St. Louis, Illinois, to Forrest and Helene (Dallos) Lourey and grew up in Richfield and Aurora, Minnesota. He graduated from Aurora-Hoyt Lakes High School in 1959 and earned his bachelors degree from the University of Minnesota in math and economics. In 1962, he married Rebecca Jo Savage in Little Falls. The couple lived in the Washington D.C. area before returning to Minnesota. In 1974, Gene and Becky moved from Minneapolis to Kerrick, where they farmed, raised their family, and built a family business. Gene's love of family and his entrepreneurial spirit were matched only by his dedication to the community. Throughout his life, in everything he did, Gene strove to make the world a better place for everyone, especially those in need. His passions were sustainable farming, politics, and social justice. Gene loved the outdoors and built miles of trails through the woods where he enjoyed walks and rides with his grandchildren. He was a voracious reader who loved solving math and logic puzzles, playing board and card games, and putting together jigsaw puzzles.

Gene was preceded in death by his sons, Jay, Fernando, and Matt (Lisa); and his father, Forrest.

Gene is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Becky; and their children, Tim of Kerrick, Tony and his wife, Marlana Benzie-Lourey, of Kerrick, Leah Gerard and her husband, Ken, of Sturgeon Lake, Kristin Verville and her husband, Scott, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Kim Bohnsack and her husband, Dan, of Sturgeon Lake, Ben and his partner, Brad Ruebel, of Benicia, California, Heidi of Kerrick, Maria Lourey-Bowen and her husband, Joe, of Kerrick, and Nick of Askov. He is also survived by his mother, Helene, of Moose Lake; his sister, Terry Berg and her husband, Bill, of Bovey; and his brother, Bruce and his wife, Sandy, of Moose Lake.  Gene will be lovingly remembered by 18 grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as many friends, neighbors, and colleagues.

An informal public memorial visitation was held for Gene at Nemadji Research Corporation (the former Bruno School), in Bruno, Thursday, October 16 from 3-7 p.m.

Arrangements by Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home in Moose Lake.
