George Frederick Kollos
George Frederick Kollos, 83, of Willow River, MN, died Thursday, October 9, 2008 in Miller Dwan Medical Center, Duluth. He was born on March 9, 1925 in McPherson Township, St. Clair, MN to Fred and Bertha (Glamm) Kollos. George was a baptized and confirmed member of St. John's Evangelical Covenant Church in St. Clair. In 1943, he graduated from St. Clair High School where he played basketball and was a member of the band. George farmed near St. Clair. He served in the US Navy during WWII as a fireman electrician aboard a destroyer escort. George later served as Post Commander of the St. Clair American Legion, Post 475. On August 1, 1953, George married Jean Armstrong in International Falls, MN. They farmed near St. Clair and in 1957 they moved to Maiden Rock, WI where they owned and operated a dairy farm. In 1969, they moved to the Janesville, MN area until 1988 when they retired and moved to the Willow River area. George was an operating engineer for the Local 49 and worked construction all over Minnesota. Later, he worked part-time as a maintenance worker at the Kettle River Rest Area. George enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and cooking for his family. He truly treasured the time spent with his family. George was a member of the Sturgeon Lake/Denham American Legion Post #361. He also enjoyed the winters of the last 10 years in Penitas, TX.George was preceded in death by his parents: Fred and Bertha Kollos; one brother: Sidney Kollos; and two grandchildren: Jason Armendariz and Joanna Armendariz.He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years: Jean; three daughters: Peggy (Charles) Frisch of Finlayson; Debra (Gary) Stewart of Finlayson; and Linda (Ron) Roemhildt of Waseca; 14 Grandchildren: Peter Frisch; Justin Frisch; Nicholas Frisch; Tatiana Frisch; Alexander Frisch; Lena Frisch; Amanda Oquist; Sarah Backstrom; John Reibeling, Jr.; Levi Stewart; Amy Krautkremer; Ben Holthus; Jesse Roemhildt; and Nick Roemhildt; 17 Great Grandchildren; two brothers:Marvin Kollos of Janesville and Harvey (Alice) Kollos of Madison Lake, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Service was on Monday, October 13, 2008 at 11:00 AM in the First United Presbyterian Church, Willow River. Pastor Bonnie Del Greco officiated. Burial was in the Finnish Lutheran Cemetery, Finlayson with Full Military Honors provided by the Sturgeon Lake/Denham American Legion Post #361.
