Gerald Theodore Hammitt

Gerald Theodore Hammitt, 92, Blackhoof Township, died Sunday, April 12, 2009 in Mercy Health Care Center, Moose Lake. He was born on November 6, 1916 in Henning, MN to Fred and Mary Hammitt. Jerry grew up in Wrenshall where he attended Pleasant Valley School. Jerry worked many different jobs including working with his grandparents in Iowa and logging with his brother. On July 15, 1939, Jerry married Helen Oman in Barnum. He was a United States Navy Veteran of WWII and had served in the South Pacific and Guam. Jerry also worked in the shipyard as a certified welder during WWII. Jerry and Helen lived in Blackhoof Twp. through the years where they farmed. He also worked for over 20 years at Moose Lake Implement and later for the Moose Lake State Hospital as a mechanical engineer until retirement. Jerry loved restoring cars and working in his workshop at home which he called, "The Palace".
He also loved spending many years at the cabin on Big Sandy and his cabin in Canada. Jerry enjoyed fishing and also many hunting adventures for moose, deer, bear, and caribou. He was a member of Elim Lutheran Church in Blackhoof Twp. and was a Life Member of the Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post #2962 of Carlton.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents: Fred and Mary Hammitt; three brothers: Ralph, Bob, and Percy; and a sister: Lena.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 69 years, Helen; his son: Ron (Barbara) Hammitt of Barnum; daughter: Judy (Glenn) Finifrock of Barnum; 8 Grandchildren: 11 Great Grandchildren: a sister: Evelyn Reed of Columbus, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held from 11:30 AM until the 1:00 funeral service on Saturday, April 18, 2009 in Elim Lutheran Church, Blackhoof Twp. Pastor John Sippola was the officiate. Military Honors were accorded by the Carlton VFW. Cremation followed the service with private family inurnment being held at a later date in Elim Lutheran Cemetery.
