Greta Colleen (Smith) Kemp, 91, of Moose Lake, Minnesota (formerly of Aberdeen and Pierpont, South Dakota), died Sunday, April 10, 2016, at her home.
She was born February 14, 1925 to Fred and Gertrude (Harmon) Smith in Mountain View, Oklahoma. She played basketball and managed a cafe before graduating from Sentinel High School in 1943. After moving to Oakland, California she met and married Alvin E. Kemp on October 4, 1943. The couple moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where Colleen worked at a lens manufacturer and diner while Alvin finished his US Marine Corps Service. After the birth of their daughter, Connie Sue in 1945, the couple bought a farm in Farmington Township, Day County, South Dakota near Alvin's birthplace. Daughters Greeta Ann (1953) and Joni Marie (1955) joined the family. Alvin and Colleen continued to farm until they retired and moved to Pierpont, South Dakota. Traveling to craft fairs to sell their hand crafted loomed rugs and volunteering at camps as cook and handy man, the couple saw the country from their fifth-wheel camper. After Alvin's death in 1996, Colleen remained in her home in Pierpont, moving to Aberdeen, South Dakota in 2012. In 2014, Colleen moved to Moose Lake, Minnesota.
She was active as a 4-H leader for over 25 years; enjoyed quilting, playing cards, and talking about her family. Colleen was also an active part of the Presbyterian church while residing in South Dakota. No matter how many places she lived, she never forgot to remind new friends that she was from Oklahoma.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Gertrude; sister Patricia and brothers Junior and Bobby; and husband, Alvin.
Colleen is survived by her siblings: Betty Adkins of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Freda Holmes of Austin, Texas, Jerry Smith of Sentinel, Oklahoma, and Buddy (Rene) Smith of Westcliffe, Colorado; daughters: Connie (Ron) Patterson of Britton, South Dakota, Ann (Richard) Blondo of Willow River, Minnesota, and Jo (Tom) Weir of Warner Springs, California; 7 grandchildren: Tricia Patterson (Mike Eaton), Paula (Brad) Heitmann, Ryan (Tawna) Patterson, Steven (Beth) Blondo, Julie (Derek) Nelson, Zachariah (Tiffany) Weirphrey, and AJ Weir; and 18 great-grandchildren: Joey, Brody, Megan, Becky, Tyler, Katie, Kylie, Sebastien and Julien, Brynlee, Ainsley, Mckinley, Bridger, Sophie, Kenna, Jaelyn, Aleece, and Marie.
