Obituary

Harold Kloehn Ebel, 94, of Moose Lake, MN died Thursday, August 4, 2016 at Mercy Hospital in Moose Lake following a stroke suffered on August 1 while playing golf at Moose Lake Country Club.
Harold was born in Lidgerwood, ND on September 22, 1921, the second of six children born to Paul and Ella (Kloehn) Ebel. In 1923, his family moved to Moose Lake, where they operated a farm on Soldier Rd. Harold graduated from Moose Lake High School in 1939 and Hibbing Junior College in 1941. He enlisted for military service following the attack on Pearl Harbor, and he served for 4 years in the US Navy, rising to the rank of Ensign.
Harold married Dorothy Robinson of Barnum, MN on November 16, 1946. Harold and Dorothy were the loving parents of three children: Jeanne Elizabeth (1951), David James (1953), and Daniel Charles (1955). They were also blessed with 26 nieces and nephews.
Harold obtained a Masters Degree from the University of Iowa and began a career in teaching and high school administration in 1951. In 1953 Harold and Dorothy moved to Elkader, IA, where Harold was high school principal and a teacher of chemistry and physics for over 30 years. Dorothy was a teacher of French and English.
Harold was an avid hunter and golfer. He was a founder and the first president of the Elkader Country Club. He had the honor of putting the first ball into play when the Country Club opened in 1966. He continued hunting and golfing into his later years and shot a deer on the Ebel family farm in Moose Lake at the age of 91.
He is remembered by all who knew and loved him for his gentle, good nature, and for the pleasure he took in life and conversation. His story telling capabilities were of high rank, aided by a near photographic recall of his life experiences. His stories always adhered strictly to fact, illustrating some aspect of human nature or an irony of life. He also had a keen interest in politics and history and enjoyed the give and take of a lively debate.

He is survived by his daughter Jeanne (Victor Heley) and son David, his sister Lois (Wesley McIntire, Phil Rainey) and brother Lorenz James (Patricia Peterson), his granddaughters Laura (Scott Minsaas), Haley and Hanna, and a great granddaughter Dylan Minsaas.

He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy in 1996 and his son Dan (Jane Powell, Pam Harsvick) in 2007. Also preceding him in death were siblings Urban (Betty Harrison), Shirley (Harry Lawrence), and Kenneth.
