Hazel Naomi Berndt, 95, of Moose Lake, formerly of Pillager, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2016 in Mercy Hospital, Moose Lake. She was born January 23, 1921 in Eden Valley to Ernest and Cressie (Bridges) Van Vickle. Hazel and her family moved to Pillager when she was 14. Hazel was united in marriage to Arthur Berndt on April 12, 1939. They were divorced in 1963. While in Pillager, she was very active in the Senior Center and also worked as head housekeeper at Madden's Resort in Brainerd for more than 20 years, all while caring for her daughter Darlene who was mentally challenged. Hazel and Darlene moved to Moose Lake in August of 1989. While in Moose Lake she became a member of Evangelical Covenant Church and helped at the senior dining, Sonshine Closet and Manor West of Moose Lake where she lived for 24 years. Hazel loved playing cards, bingo, gardening, cooking, sewing and especially spending time with her family.
Hazel is preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Darlene Berndt; 1 great grandchild; 3 brothers, Orville, Earl "Tuff", and Dwain "Spike" Van Vickle.
Hazel is survived by 3 children, Dorothy (Dannie) Williams of San Antonio, TX, Duane (Ruth) Berndt of Sauk Rapids and Delores (Ed) Disterhaupt of Sioux City, IA; her 97 year old sister, Ruth Richmond; 8 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be Monday, July 11, from 10 AM until the 11 AM Service in Evangelical Covenant Church, Moose Lake. Interment will be in Wildwood Cemetery, Pillager.
