Hazel "Shirley" Langhorst, 94, of Barnum, went home to Jesus on Thursday, August 20, 2015. She was born June 26, 1921 in Superior, WI to John and Nettie (Bryant) Hill. After graduating from high school, Shirley moved to Chicago to live with her Aunt Enid and Uncle Elmer and was a nanny for her twin cousins, Caryl and Susan. Shirley was united in marriage to Ferdinand Langhorst on September 3, 1949 in Barnum Township. Shirley was a member of Carlton Co. Homemakers, 4-H and Emmanuel Lutheran Church where she was a member of Ladies Aid, Sunday School Teacher, Bible School Teacher and Pre-School Teacher. Shirley was a great cook and was known for her baked bread and birthday cakes that she would make for everyone. Shirley enjoyed working in her big gardens, strawberry patches and flower beds, canning, deer hunting and walks in the woods. Shirley also made hundreds of quilts for weddings, baby showers, family and friends. Many of her items were exhibited at the Carlton County Fair. Shirley enjoyed time with her sisters and they went on many trips over the years.
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, Ferdinand; her parents; 3 children, Leslie Benson, Charles Langhorst and Robin Langhorst; grandson, Hunter Langhorst; sisters, Marion Finifrock, Beverly Fetters and Audrie Hill; brother, Ronald Hill.
Shirley is survived by her children, Jon (Sara) Langhorst of Barnum, Linda (Emil) Laine of Kettle River and Crystal (Terry) Luomanen of Barnum; grandchildren, Jeff and Jeremy Laine, Shawn, Zachary, Travis, Lucas, Jesse, Alexandra, Ashlynn and Morgan Langhorst, Seth Thomsen, Jennifer Schatz, Angel Finifrock, Sarah Krueger, Mandie Resberg and Eryn Szymczak; 33 great grandchildren; sister, Joyce LaValley of Superior; son-in-law, Wally Benson of Barnum; 2 daughters-in-law, Vickey (Carmen) Milczark of Barnum and Janet (Mike) Adelsgruber of Kettle River; several nieces and nephews and her dog, Shadow.
Visitation will be Friday, August 28, from 10 AM until the 11 AM Service in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Barnum. Interment will be in Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Barnum.
