Obituary

Helen Katherine Hammitt, 92, of Barnum, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2013 in Mercy Hospital, Moose Lake. She was born June 1, 1921 in Barnum to Rudolf and Anna (Anderson) Oman. Helen attended Blackhoof Country School as well as Carlton High School. Helen was united in marriage to Gerald Hammitt on July 15, 1939 in Barnum. They lived in Blackhoof Township where they farmed for many years. Helen worked for several years at Moose Lake Regional Treatment Center until her retirement. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, quilting, weaving rugs, baking, decorating wedding cakes, fishing, hunting and was well known for making her Swedish Rye Bread. Helen and Gerald enjoyed spending many summers at the cabin on Big Sandy Lake as well as the cabin in Canada. She was a member of Elim Lutheran Church of Blackhoof Township and life member of Ladies Auxiliary of Carlton.

Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; her parents; daughter, Judy Finifrock; 2 sisters and 5 brothers.

Helen is survived by 1 son, Ron (Barbara) Hammitt of Barnum; 8 grandchildren, Kurtis (Susan) Hammitt, Brian (Stephanie) Hammitt, Cheryl (Paul) Overn, Paul (Kris) Hammitt, Tony Luomanen, Terry (Crystal) Luomanen, Tina (Justin) Gilbert and Jerry Finifrock; 12 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; brother, Maurice Oman of Ironton; son-in-law, Glenn Finifrock of Barnum; numerous nieces and nephews.
