Helen C. Shusta, 101, died Thursday, March 12, 2009 in Mercy Hospital, Moose Lake. She was born on July 20, 1907 in Superior, WI to Joseph and Eva Kowalczyk. At the age of 7, Helen moved with her family to Buyck, MN where she grew up and attended school. On October 15, 1928, Helen married Felix Shusta in Buyck. They lived in Split Rock Twp. where they farmed and Helen was a homemaker through the years. After Felix's death in 1971, Helen moved to Hillside Manor West in Moose Lake. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Split Rock Township and later at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Moose Lake.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; four brothers; her husband, Felix in 1971; 2 sons, Anthony in 1932 and Joseph in 1955; daughter, Caroline Carlson in 2008; 2 grandchildren, Paul Shusta and Jerome Granda.
She will be lovingly remembered by her 2 sons, Frank (Shirley) Shusta of Ely and Ted (Diane) Shusta of Duluth; 3 daughters; Mary Granda of Barnum, Florence Sipsas of Duluth and Pat (Butch) Ketchmark of Garrison; 72 Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, and Great Great Grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be Friday, March 20, from 6 to 8 PM in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake with a prayer service at 7:30 P.M and will continue Saturday, March 21, from 10 AM until the 11 AM Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Angels Catholic Church, Moose Lake with Father Eamonn Boland as the Celebrant. Spring Burial will be held in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Split Rock Twp.
