Herman O. Nelson
Herman O. Nelson, 89, Rutledge, died Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at his home. He was born on September 22, 1921 in Milnor, North Dakota to Oscar and Della Nelson. Herman grew up in North Dakota where he farmed with his parents. In 1943, Herman entered the United States Army. He was a proud Veteran of WWII and had landed on Omaha Beach at Normandy on D-Day. Herman was also in Europe and Germany, serving until the end of WWII. After the service, Herman began working for the Smith Foundry in Minneapolis. He married his first wife, Leona Feidt whom died on March 22, 1985. On October 9, 1987, Herman married Beverly Anderson in Breckenridge. They moved to Rutledge in 1989. Herman loved tractors, working outdoors, and working on small engines. He was a member of the Pine City VFW Post #4258, Sturgeon Lake/Denham American Legion Post #361, and the Timberwolf Association.
Herman was preceded in death by his first wife: Leona Nelson in 1985; a daughter: Carol Ann Wald in 1990; brother: Kenneth Nelson; and his sister: Viola Carlson.
Herman will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Beverly; son: Keith (Debra) Nelson of Cottage Grove; two step-sons: Thomas (Tara) Anderson of Shakopee and Timothy Anderson of Inver Grove Heights; two step-daughters: Kathleen (Scott) DeKarske of St. Paul and Lynn (Dave) Miskowiec of Maplewood; brother: James (Donna) Nelson of Inver Grove Heights; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and a host of friends.
Visitation was from 10 AM until 11 AM on Friday, September 16, 2011 in St. Mary's Center, Willow River. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 AM on Friday, September 16, 2011 in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Willow River. Father Sunny Thomas was the celebrant. Joy Novak provided the music. Casket Bearers were Steven Nelson, Dennis Nelson, Brent Nelson, Wesley Nelson, Paul Nelson, and Tom Anderson. Military Honors following Mass was accorded by the Sturgeon Lake/Denham American Legion Post #361.
Burial was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Monday, September 19, 2011 at 10:15 am in Assembly Area #5.
