Hugo I. Metso

Hugo I. Metso, 96, Aitkin, formerly of Kettle River and Moose Lake, died on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 in Aicota Healthcare Center, Aitkin. Our nation lost another WWII Veteran on Veterans Day 2009. He was born on October 4, 1913 in Minneapolis to John and Senjia Metso. He lived in Kettle River and attended the Berglund Elementary School in Automba. Hugo was a survivor of the 1918 Moose Lake Fire and was with his family as they took refuge in waters of Moose Lake. At the age of 15, Hugo left home and found employment at various farms in North Dakota and later in the lumber business in northern Minnesota. In 1942, Hugo entered the Army Air Corp and served for four years as an Army Surgical Technician at the Maxwell Army Hospital in Alabama.
After the war, Hugo's employment consisted of carpentry, an operation technician at the Diamond Match Company in Cloquet and he was the Manager of the hardware department of the local Co-op Store. He also operated a small dairy farm with his wife, Julia whom he married on November 13, 1954 in Carlton.
After his retirement, Hugo made his home in Moose Lake and Aitkin.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Julia in 1997; three brothers: Hagen, Harry, and Harold; one sister: Hazel; two infant siblings; step-son: Norman Manty; and two step-daughters: Donna Yang and Pauline Zywicki.

Hugo will be lovingly remembered by his son: Brian (Hyon) Metso of Tokyo, Japan; grandson: Kevin of Dallas, TX; Stepsons: Leo, Vern, Rueben, Bruce, and Gary Manty; Step-Daughters: Janet Montgomery,
Jean Voldness; and Karen Morgan; nieces and nephews: Michael, Ronald, and Jack Metso; Marsha Partin, Marie Paulson, Sonja Moon; a sister-in-law: Josephine Metso; and numerous step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.


Visitation was held from 10 AM until the 11 AM service on Monday, November 16, 2009 in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to your local food shelf.
