Joyce Arlene Hultberg, 77, of Moose Lake, formerly of Hermantown, passed away Thursday, September 19, 2013 in Mercy Hospital, Moose Lake. She was born April 13, 1936 in Duluth to Roy and Dorothy (Morse) Nelson. Joyce was a graduate of Hermantown High School (1953) and St. Luke's Nursing School (1956). She worked for 41 years at the Moose Lake State Hospital as an RN and Client Advocate, retiring in 2001. Joyce was an avid bowler, recording the first 600 series (621) by a female in Moose Lake history (December 16, 1971). She also enjoyed reading, bridge club, Minnesota Twins baseball, politics, watching tennis, and her collections of clowns, moose, and loons. Over the years Joyce was involved with the Carlton County Republican Caucus, Moose Lake Summer Theater, Moose Lake Historical Society, Miss Moose Lake Coronation/Variety Show, and helped build many floats for the 4th of July parade. An organizer at heart, she helped put on many Hermantown HS and St. Luke's Nursing reunions, and became the unofficial curator for the history of the state hospital.
Joyce is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Roberta Hayes and Nancylou Schlendorf; brothers-in-law, Howard Hayes and Jack Schlendorf.
Joyce is survived by 1 son, Scot (Michelle) Hultberg of Arden Hills; 2 grandchildren, Joe and Katie; brother, Ken (Lys) Nelson of Lewiston, ID and her best friend, Louise Halverson of Moose Lake.
