Karl Schatz
Karl Schatz, 82, Kettle River, died peacefully at home on February 3, 2018. He was born on September 28, 1935 in Kintyre, ND to Gabriel and Benedicta Schatz and was the youngest of 8 children. He farmed with his family prior to marrying Caroline Reis on September 28, 1955 in Kintyre, ND. They moved to Bismarck in 1961. Karl hauled grain and in 1963 he met a gentleman in Floodwood who mentioned a farm for sale near Kettle River which he ended up purchasing and moving in February 1964. He farmed with his family through the years in rural Kettle River and drove truck for Indianhead for over 17 years. Karl was hard working, very innovative, and always thinking. He came up with several inventions that made jobs easier for him and others. In the 1980's he invented the Warm Home Stove and began a business which he later operated in Wright. He also was a supervisor for Automba Twp. for 11 years. Karl was an active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Barnum and later Holy Angels Catholic Church in Moose Lake where he was instrumental in building the parsonage and was involved in their Men's Club. He also enjoyed his Friday morning business meeting with his "country guys" that discussed several details regarding weather, cattle reports, grain reports, and other matters.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 7 brothers; son: Blaine; and daughter-in-law: Colleen Schatz.
Karl is survived by his wife of 62 years, Caroline; 7 children: Belinda Schatz of Frederick, MD; Dean Schatz of Gillette, WY; Don (Dawn) Schatz of Kettle River; DeAnn Schatz of Ely; Kenny (Dawn) Schatz of Moose Lake; Kurt (Jenny) Schatz of Kettle River; and Kevin (Bobbi) Schatz of Columbus, MT; 19 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; daughter-in-law: Jodi Schatz of Kettle River; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
