Leo R. McQuiston

Leo R. McQuiston, 84, Sandstone, formerly of Barnum, died Saturday, January 24, 2009 in Pine Medical Health Care Center, Sandstone. He was born on November 4, 1924 in Savage, MN to John and Margaret McQuiston. Leo grew up in Savage where he attended school. After school, Leo worked as a welder for Cargill in the shipyards. In 1944, Leo married Ida June Patch in Savage and later moved to St. Paul. Leo worked for Seeger-Sunbeam Refrigerator where he made bomb racks until after WWII when they returned their production to refrigerators. In 1946, Leo moved to Sandstone and started to farm. Leo began working for Minnesota Power in 1951. On May 16, 1960, Leo married Phyllis Campbell in Reno, Nevada. They moved to Barnum in 1968 and Leo continued working for Minnesota Power until retiring in 1983 after 32 years of service.
Leo loved to visit his family and will be remembered for baking his caramel rolls and angel food cakes which his grandchildren always looked forward to at family functions. Leo was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis in 1992; a daughter: Charlotte McQuiston; three sons: Benjamin, Patrick, and Orville; grandson: Leon McQuiston; 8 brothers; and 4 sisters.

Leo will be lovingly remembered by his six sons: Charles (Sue) of Duluth; Raymond (Patty) of Hinckley; Ralph of Sebeka; Robert (Toni) of St. Paul; John (Laurie) of Vadnais Heights; and William (Carolee) of Williston, ND; two daughters: Theresa Carlson of Roseville and Joyce (Todd) Bryant of Cloquet;
daughter-in-law: Susie Sonnenfeld of Winona; two sisters: Alice Bungert of Bloomington and Rita Bungert of Lakeville; 25 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation was from 6-8 PM Tuesday, January 27, 2009 in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake and continue Wednesday, January 28, 2009 from 10 AM until the 11 AM Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Angels Catholic Church, Moose Lake. Father Timothy Deutsch was the celebrant. Music was provided by Regi Garvey and the Holy Angels Choir. Casket Bearers were Devin McQuiston, Jeremy McQuiston, Joey McQuiston, Ryan McQuiston, Matthew McQuiston, James McQuiston, Craig McQuiston, and Christopher McQuiston. Spring Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Barnum. Memorials are preferred to Holy Angels Catholic Church.
