Lillian Theresa Ronkainen Peterson Lampel
Lillian Theresa Ronkainen Peterson Lampel, 105 years, 7 months, of Kettle River, died peacefully on April 13, 2012 in Augustana Mercy Health Care Center, Moose Lake where she received loving care for 6 years.
She was born on September 8, 1906, the third oldest and last surviving child of Frank and Josephine Ronkainen of Kettle River. Lillian was a 1918 Fire Survivor, being 12 years old at the time. After the death of her first husband, Adolph Peterson, she worked as head cook in her father's lumber camps in northern Minnesota. She married Arvi H. Lampel in 1926 and they farmed north of Kettle River, MN.
Lillian was a hard worker all her life and was active in her community on the Co-op Board, Kalevala PTA, and wrote news for the Star Gazette and later the Arrowhead Leader for many years. She was elected the first President of the Kettle River Senior Citizens and in 1984 was elected Outstanding Citizen of Kettle River Senior Citizens. In August 1990 she was Grand Marshall of the Ma & Pa Kettle Parade. Lillian was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and its Mission Guild. She enjoyed going for walks, cross-country skiing, making rugs on her loom, crocheting doilies and afghans, and knitting stockings and mittens for her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Alma Haapla and Irene Sippola; brothers: Arnie, Bill, Edwin, Elmer, and Nestor; her husbands; sons: Harvey and Ray; son-in-law: Roland Koivisto; daughter-in-law: Donna Lampel; and grandson: Dean Koivisto.
Lillian is survived by daughters: Gladyce Koivisto of Santa Maria, CA and Betty (James) Lehet of Moose Lake; 14 grandchildren and their spouses; 3 step grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 8 great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 from 5-7 PM in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake and continue from Noon until the 1 PM service on Thursday, April 19, 2012 in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Kettle River. Burial will be in Holy Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Kettle River.
