Mabel D. Schauland, 95, Dedicated Educator, Volunteer, Humanitarian, and Philanthropist, of Duluth, went to be with her Lord on Monday, July 8, 2019.  She was born on February 10, 1924 to August and Anna Schauland in Nemadji where she grew up and attended Central School and was Valedictorian of her 8 ^th grade class.  Mabel later attended Barnum High School and was Salutatorian of her graduating class in 1942.  Mabel worked at the Cloquet Match Mill from 1942-1945.  She attained her BS Degree at UMD in 1949 graduating Cum Laude and earned the American Legion Award for Outstanding Woman Graduate and honored as Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges.  While at UMD, Mabel was involved in Undergrad Honorary Organizations of Kappa Delta Pi–Education, Gamma Theta Upsilon–Geography, and Phi Alpha Theta–History.  She later obtained her M.A. from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in 1953 and went on to attend 2 years post M.A. at the University of Wisconsin in 1967. She later attained her PhD.

Mabel began her teaching career at Leech School in Cloquet from 1949-1954, continued teaching at the UMD Lab School from 1954-1965 and lastly taught as a professor at UMD from 1967-1987.  Her teaching career led her to many awards including: Outstanding Teacher of Child and Family Development in 1987, Who's Who of American Women 1979-1980, Who's Who in the Midwest 1980-1981, and the Duluth Association for Retarded Citizens and Minnesota Association for Retarded Citizens Teacher of the Year.  Mabel was also involved in the Arrowhead Readers Association and Pi Lambda Theta-Education.

Besides teaching, Mabel was committed to the Duluth community and made a huge impact in the lives of many.  She was honored in 1991 as the Duluth Woman of the Year and 1994 as the recipient of the Duluth Hall of Fame Award.  Mabel was very active up to her last days and during her lifetime had volunteered and served on numerous boards and organizations.  Mabel's goal in life was to make the world a better place and to influence others in a positive manner, especially helping those that were dealing with a handicap.  A small listing of some of these boards, organizations, and accomplishments which were very dear to Mabel's heart and in no particular order were as follows: Women's Institute of Duluth, CHUM, helped with the building of the playground on Duluth Water Front, Parliamentarian for the Port Cities Luncheon, General Federation of Women's Club/MN (GFWC), GFWC 20 ^th Century Club, helped prepare food at Damiano Center, Women's Bridge Club, Salvation Army Board of Directors, tutoring many children and adults in the Duluth area, Altrusa, Docent at Glensheen, Duluth Superior Symphony, UMD Theater, Goodwill Industries Vocational Enterprises Board, Residential Services Inc. Board, United Development Achievement Center Board, Duluth Regional Care Center Board, Epilepsy League of Lake Superior Board of Directors, Women's Club of Duluth, United Cerebral Palsy on local, state, and national levels, Duluth Association of Retired Teachers, and the Arrowhead Epilepsy League.  Mabel had received the United Cerebral Palsy Humanitarian Service Award in 1990, Certificate from Epilepsy Foundation of MN in recognition of contributing towards improving lives of persons with epilepsy, Certificate of Recognition from National Association for Retarded Citizens for Outstanding Service on behalf of Retarded Citizens of All Ages from 1954-1987,  Humanitarian Service Award UCP, and the Community Service Award for Leadership in Education and Training of Students in the Field of Development Disabilities in 1976.  As a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, Mabel taught Sunday School, Confirmation, and was a member of the Lydia Church Circle.

In her spare time, Mabel enjoyed her hobbies of skiing, golf, bowling, playing bridge, camping, and traveling throughout Europe, United States, and the Middle East while capturing photos of her travels and creating thousands of slides.  In her early years during the summer while she cared for her father, Mabel enjoyed having her nieces and nephews over teaching them how to swim in Sandy Lake.

Mabel had a great life, right to the end and truly influenced many with her extremely, kind heart and generousity.

She was preceded in death by her parents: August and Anna Schauland; siblings: Katherine Olsen, Marie Malkovich, Millie Katalinich, Herman Schauland, Charlie Schauland, Richard Schauland, and Margaret Swanson; and nephews: Arne Swanson, Walter Olsen, Jr., and George Olsen.

She will be lovingly remembered by her sister-in-law: Gladys Schauland; nieces and nephews: Richard (Marge) Swanson, Darla Swanson, Danny (Janel) Swanson, Ronald (Jeanne) Schauland, Kenneth (Sue) Schauland, Mark (Margie) Schauland, Marvin (Debra) Schauland, Debra (Duane) Wyse, Dora Chivers, Jack (Judy) Olsen, Judith Young, Nanette (Lonnie) Gustafson, Honor Schauland, and August Schauland; numerous great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces, great great nephews, and good friend: Gloria Burnette.

The family would like to sincerely thank her friends and staff at Mount Royal Manor Apartments where she lived for 55 plus years and those at Ecumen Lakeshore Lutheran Assisted Living where she lived the last 6 months.  We thank you for your wonderful friendship, care, and watchful eyes.  God Bless you all.

Visitation will be from Noon until the 1 PM service on Saturday, July 13, 2019 in Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 2012 E. Superior St., Duluth. Burial will follow at 4 PM in Sandy Lake Cemetery, Blackhoof Twp.
