MaryLu Carlson, 91, Sandstone, formerly of Moose Lake, died peacefully on Thursday, March 21, 2024 in Sandstone Nursing Home. The family would like to thank the staff at Sandstone Nursing Home and St. Croix Hospice for the wonderful care given to MaryLu.
MaryLu was born on June 3, 1932 in Dell Grove Twp. in Pine County to Thomas and Marguerite Williams. MaryLu grew up and attended school in Dell Grove Twp. until the 5th grade when she moved west of Hinckley with her family and attended a country school. She later attended school in Hinckley graduating in 1950. MaryLu then attended St. Cloud Teachers College where she attained her two-year teaching degree. MaryLu taught in Sandstone, Moose Lake, Hinckley only to return to Moose Lake for 8 years of teaching and lastly finishing her career at Barnum for 27 years, retiring in 1990 after 38 years of teaching. MaryLu continued to further her education during her teaching career and attained a Bachelor's Degree from UMD in 1962 and later she received her Master's. She absolutely loved taking her 6th grade class to the Environmental Center in Isabella for many years of adventures! On June 9, 1956, MaryLu married Norman Carlson in Moose Lake. They lived in Hinckley for one year and then lived in Moose Lake until moving to the Assisted Living in Sandstone in 2019. She was a member of the Minnesota Federation of Teachers, Alpha Delta Kappa Si, Hope Lutheran Church and its Esther Circle, and the Red Hat Women of Moose Lake. Mary Lu loved to volunteer with Norman in their community and helped with several Lutheran Brotherhood Projects and with their church in Alamo, Texas where they wintered for over 25 years.
MaryLu was preceded in death by her husband, Norman in 2019; and brother and sister-in-law: Robert and Violet Williams.
She will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters: Debra Kay (Eric) Swensson and Barbara J. (Tim) Folsted; two grandchildren: Andrea (Ben Clark) Swensson and Kyle Folsted; two great grandchildren: Aili Clark and Channing Clark; two sisters-in-law: Delores Weske and Jane (Harry) Carlson; three brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Richard (Donna) Carlson; Thomas (Sue) Carlson; and Dennis (Joann) Carlson; God Son: Ben Carlson; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation will be from Noon until the 1 pm service on Friday, April 5, 2024 in Hope Lutheran Church, Moose Lake. Burial will follow the service in Sunset Memorial Cemetery, Moose Lake. Lunch will follow the burial at the church.
