It is with great love and gratitude for her remarkable life that we share the passing of Maureen Frances (Alexander) Durand on May 15, 2026 - a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Born in Ada, MN on February 12, 1949, and raised in North Minneapolis, Maureen was a proud Northsider whose deep roots in her neighborhood, love for family, and trailblazing career defined her extraordinary life. She was a force of nature, with her confidence and spark making an impact on everyone she met.

For more than 55 years, Maureen shared a loving and devoted partnership with her husband, Al, built on a lifetime of laughter and mutual support. Together, they raised three children; Sheila (Steve), Shannon (Nick), and Joe (Marcela). Maureen loved being a Grandma and found great joy in spending time with her grandchildren Nirvana, Scarlett, Matt, Max, and Bruno. She shared a close and loving bond with her siblings - Bill, Jeanne, Danny, and Ann - whose support and connection remained important throughout her life.

Maureen dedicated her career to public service throughout Minneapolis, serving as a Park Director, Park Planner, and later Assistant Superintendent of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. She helped shape parks, bike paths, and recreation programs while mentoring future leaders and advocating for accessible green spaces. After retirement, Maureen enjoyed time at the cabin, traveling, and making memories with friends and family.

Maureen had a zest for life and was known as a Dancing Queen, always ready to dance and bring joy to those around her. She had a special gift for making everyone feel welcome and bringing people together wherever she went.

Maureen was preceded in death by her loving parents, Margaret and Harold, and her brother, Patrick. She is survived by her beloved husband Al, her adoring family, and countless friends.

Our family extends our deepest gratitude to the compassionate care teams at St. Therese in Corcoran and Grace Hospice, whose kindness and support during Maureen's final days will always be remembered.

A celebration of Maureen's life will be held Thursday, May 28, from 4pm-8pm, with a ceremony at 6pm, at the Theodore Wirth Chalet (1301 Theodore Wirth Pkwy, Golden Valley, MN 55422); a fitting Minneapolis Park Board location to share stories and raise a glass in her honor.
