Maurice "Maury" Coughlin, 87, Moose Lake, died Thursday, October 12, 2023 in Moose Lake Village. He was born on January 3, 1936 to Max and Ina Coughlin in Detroit Lakes where he grew up and attended school. Maury worked as an Electrician in Detroit Lakes for Long and Sumner Electric. On January 17, 1958, Maury married Betty Cook in Detroit Lakes. In 1967, they moved to Moose Lake where Maury began working as an Electrician for the Moose Lake State Hospital where he later worked as Building Maintenance Supervisor and retired as Physical Plant Director in 1999 from the same facility which had become the MN Department of Corrections. Maury proudly served his country from 1954 -1979 in the Minnesota Army National Guard "Viking" Infantry Division retiring as Captain. During that time, he also served as Company Commander for the Virginia (MN) Army National Guard from 1972 to 1974. He was a member of Moose Lodge #479, American Legion Post #379, Sons of Norway, assisted in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in Moose Lake, and served on the Moose Lake Water & Light Commission for over 30 years. Maury was an avid fan of the Vikings, Twins, Lynx, Wolves and local teams. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, bowling, baking for Christmas and decorating the home for every holiday. Maury was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church and served as Eucharistic Minister (EOM).
He was preceded in death by his parents: Max and Ina Coughlin; sister: Ann Glander; sister and brother-in-law: Ruth and Larry Engen; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Cecil, Sr. and Laura Cook; brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Cecil, Jr. and Betty Cook; brother-in-law and sister-in-law:Dick and Edith Cook; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law: Carol Barker, John Kraker and Tom Barker.
Maury will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years: Betty; daughter: Candyce (Ralph) Sandberg; 2 sons: Cory (Teresa) Coughlin and Casey (Jillian) Coughlin; 6 grandchildren: Robby (Kristin) Sandberg, Cody Coughlin, Addison Coughlin, Zoe Coughlin, Caden Coughlin, and Olivia Coughlin; great grandson: Austin Sandberg; brother: Rodney (Jane) Coughlin; sister: Carolyn (Bob) Eilertson; brother-in-law: Duane Glander; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family would like to express its sincerest appreciation to the staff and caregivers from the Infusion Center (Maury's Girls), Moose Lake Village, Essentia Hospital, Dr. Ryan Harden, Dr. Ray Christensen, and to Mark Faber for all of his help.
Visitation will be from 4-6 pm on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake and continue from 10 am until the 11 am Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 in Holy Angels Catholic Church, Moose Lake. Burial with Military Honors will follow Mass in Sunset Memorial Cemetery, Moose Lake.
