Mike A. Shimell, 94, of Split Rock Towship, died Saturday, March 10, 2012 in Mercy Hospital, Moose Lake. He was born November 17, 1917 in Split Rock Township to John and Katherine (Tomczak) Shimell. Mike was a survivor of the 1918 Fire. He attended Lincoln School in Split Rock Township and graduated from Cloquet High School. Mike was united in marriage to Marion Brebis on September 13, 1941 in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Split Rock Township. Mike worked in St. Paul as a heavy equipment operator and also drove truck. After retiring, Mike and Marion moved back to Split Rock Township. Mike was a member St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Holy Angels Catholic Church as well as The Star Club and Knights of Columbus. Mike was also Pa Kettle in 2009. He loved growing tomatoes and his life's passion was running heavy equipment.
Mike is preceded in death by his wife Marion; his parents; daughter, Karen Rice; 2 brothers, John and George; 3 sisters, Eleanor, Martha and Zoe; son-in-law, Lew Rice.
Mike is survived by 1 daughter, Mary (Gary) East; 1 granddaughter, Amy (Joe) East-Glenn; 1 grandson, Michael Anthony East; lady friend and companion, Kathleen Peters and her children, Pam, John and Mark; special friends, Jack and Pat Kolodge; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation was on Friday, March 16, from 10 AM until 11 AM Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Angels Catholic Church, Moose Lake.
