Norman W. Carlson, 92, Sandstone, formerly of Moose Lake, died Sunday, June 2, 2019 in Sandstone Health Care Center. He was born on October 11, 1926 in Lawler, MN to Leonard and Aili Carlson.
Norman attended school in Lawler, Kettle River, and Moose Lake, obtaining his GED after serving in the military. He worked at the Co-op store in the meat department before entering the Army. Norman's military service took him from Ft. Leonard, MO and Camp Hood, TX to California before being deployed to South Korea. He was honorably discharged as a WWII Veteran in 1946. Norman married the love of his life, MaryLu Williams, at the United Methodist Church of Moose Lake on June 9 th , 1956. Together, they enjoyed 25 years' worth of winter trips to Alamo Palms, TX. He worked at the Moose Lake State Hospital, retiring in 1985. Norman was a proud and active resident of Moose Lake; he volunteered for Lutheran Brotherhood Branch Events #8086, helped remodel the Moose Lake Depot, and was a member of Hope Lutheran Church and the Moose Lake American Legion. Amongst the many things Norman will be remembered for, he always kept a meticulous lawn, was an expert at throwing horseshoes, and loved to host holiday gatherings and participate in his own birthday parties. Throughout the years, Norman was a dedicated Minnesota sports fan, and a champion bowler. He bowled in a senior league up until November, 2018. Norman and MaryLu moved to assisted living in Sandstone in 2019. Above all else, Norman was a committed Husband, supportive Father, loving Grandfather, and was thrilled to become a Great-Grandfather to Aili, who was named after his Mother.
Norman is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clifford, Harry, Edgar, and Allen; sister, Evelyn; brother-in-law, Walt Weske; and sister-in-law, Violet Williams.
His memory will be cherished by his wife of nearly 63 years, MaryLu; daughters, Debra Kay (Eric) Swensson and Barbara Jean (Tim) Folsted; grandchildren, Andrea (Ben Clark) Swensson and Kyle Folsted; great-granddaughter, Aili Clark; sister, Delores Weske; brothers, Richard (Donna), Thomas (Sue), and Dennis (Joann); Godchild, Benjamin Carlson; brother-in-law, Bob (Judy) Williams; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
A special thank you from Norman's Family goes to Karen and Andrea from St. Croix Hospice for their above and beyond care for Norman and his family.
A visitation to honor Norman's life will be held from 5-7pm on Friday, June 7 th , 2019 at Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home in Moose Lake. Visitation will continue on Saturday, June 8 th from 1pm until the 2pm funeral at Hope Lutheran Church in Moose Lake. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery.
