Raymond "Red" John Von Rueden, 92, of Sturgeon Lake, passed away Thursday, June 30, 2016 in Augustana Mercy Health Care Center, Moose Lake. He was born April 11, 1924 in Hinckley to Edward and Catherine (Birnbaum) Von Rueden. Red was a veteran of The United States Marine Corps who served during WWII. While Red lived in Hinckley, he hauled milk, farmed crops and pigs, he was a bartender at the Hinckley City Bar and was County Assessor. Red was united in marriage to Fern Dahl on November 15, 1948 in St. Paul. In 1967, Red and Fern moved to Sturgeon Lake where they owned and operated Red's Embassy Bar until 1979. Red had various jobs following the sale of the Embassy including construction. Red and Fern loved "treasure hunting" at garage sales. Red was known to purchase items at garage sales in the cities and sell these "treasures" back in Sturgeon Lake for a profit. Red also loved fishing, hunting, coin collecting, cooking, baking and especially spending time with his family. Red was a member of St. Isidore's Catholic Church, Sturgeon Lake, American Legion Post #388 and V.F.W. Post #4118, both of Hinckley.
Red is preceded in death by his wife, Fern; his parents; in-law's, Milton Dahl, Elton (Pat) Dahl, Russ Haddon and LaVerne Wicklund.
Red is survived by 1 son, Alan Von Rueden of Kerrick; 2 daughters, Sandra (Jim) Sikkink of Brook Park and Joan (Denny) Stockamp of Sturgeon Lake; grandchildren, Lynn (Dan) Lewis, Jeffrey (Kay) Sikkink, Quentin, Tyler and Brandi Von Rueden; great grandchildren, Samantha, Kaitlyn and Daniel Lewis; sisters, Mona (Lester) Klar of Hinckley and Pat (Don) Anderson of Blaine; brother-in-law, Norman (Pat) Dahl of Coon Rapids; sister-in-law, Lorraine Haddon of CA and Phyllis Wicklund of WA; numerous nieces, nephews, great nephews and nieces.
A gathering of family friends will be Tuesday, July 5, from 5-7 PM in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake and will continue Wednesday, July 6 from 10 AM until the 11 AM Mass of Christian Burial in St. Isidore's Catholic Church, Sturgeon Lake. Honorary Bearers are Red's grandchildren and great grandchildren. Inurnment will be at a later date in Rosehill Cemetery, Hinckley.
