Dick grew up in Roseville and graduated from Alexander-Ramsey High School. Shortly after, Dick enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving from July, 1961 through his honorable discharge in November, 1964. Dick married Gail on February 13 th , 1982 in West St. Paul. After many years of spending weekends at Ray and Marge's Campground in Sturgeon Lake, they made Sturgeon Lake their permanent residence in 1999. Together, Dick and Gail enjoyed 12 winters at their home in Pharr, TX where they had many, many friends. Dick was an outdoorsman at heart; he loved camping, fishing, campfires, four-wheeling, and snowmobiling. Most of all, he enjoyed taking his pontoon around Sturgeon Lake, to share details of the lake and the lake's history with his family and friends. One of Dick's hobbies was woodworking, and he was also passionate about making sure the bird feeders were always full.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Beatrice; brother, Graham; daughter-in-law, Tracey Johnson; and the love of his life, Pomeranian, Mitzi.

Dick will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 37 years, Gail; children, Rick Johnson, Cathy (David) Hanna, and Bonnie (Steven) Parsons; step-children, Todd Lacy, Dean (fiancé, Christina) Lacy, and Jane (Mark) Krebsbach; 14 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Lyn (Jim) Bergstrom; sister-in-law, Jaci Johnson; and special friends, Kent and Karen Smith, Chuck and Nance Pace, Greg and Sherri Swat, Bob White, Jeff Scott, and numerous pals at Ray and Marge's.
