Richard R. Hambly, 91, of Moose Lake passed away October 29, 2013 in Augustana Mercy Health Care Center, Moose Lake. He was born February 11, 1922 in Duluth to Richard O. and Josephine (Randall) Hambly. Richard graduated from Duluth Central in 1939. He attended Duluth Business University before enrolling in Duluth Jr. College, leaving there his sophomore year to enlist in the Air Corp. He served in the China-Burma-India Theater with the Flying Tigers 529th Fighter Squadron as well as the 33rd Fighter Squadron in Burma. After the war, Richard went back to college until becoming employed by Standard Oil in 1946. He remained employed there until his retirement as District Representative working out of Moose Lake. He covered Northeast MN most of that time. Richard was united in marriage to June M. Tuomi on March 4, 1950 in Eveleth. June became Richard's favorite golfing companion as well as his best friend. While living in Moose Lake, he was active in community affairs, heading the Moose Lake Area Charities Drive for a number of years. Richard was also on the Moose Lake School Board for 15 years, serving as Clerk for 9 of those years. He was active in golfing circles in the area, participating in many tournaments as well as serving as Secretary and Treasurer of the Moose Lake Golf Club for many years. He also played in the North Lakes Golf Association for over 25 years. Richard also was on the Moose Lake Planning Commission for a spell and especially enjoyed selling tickets at the door for the Moose Lake Talent Contest during the 4th of July Celebration for several years. He was a strong believer in "It is not who we are, but rather, what we leave behind". He and his wife, June enjoyed their annual reunions with the Flying Tigers Fighter Squadron where Richard was Chairman of their Memorial Committee. Dick was a Member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, being on their vestry in different offices as well as a member of St. Michaels Episcopal Church of Orlando, FL where he and his wife had their winter home until 2003.
Dick is preceded in death by his son, Richard C.; sister, Vivien Overmann; brother, Wayne Hambly.
Dick is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, June; son, David of Denham, daughter, Susan (John) Powell of Exira, IA; 1 granddaughter, Casey Lee Powell of Austin, TX and brother, Ross Hambly of La Conner, WA.
A gathering of family and friends will be Friday, November 1, from 5 – 7 P.M. in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake. To honor Richard's wishes, Private Services will be held.
Memorials are preferred to the Moose Lake American Legion Post #379 or St. Andrews Episcopal Church of Moose Lake, Minnesota.
