Obituary

Richard K. "Rick" Waseen, 60, of Barnum, died Friday, February 27, 2009 in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth with his family by his side after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was born August 27, 1948 in Moose Lake to Norman and Lorraine (Gardner) Waseen. After graduating from Barnum High School in 1966 and the Duluth Technical School in 1970, Rick joined the I.B.E.W. Local #242 as a Journeyman Electrician. Rick was united in marriage to Kathleen Peterson on March 6, 1971 and together they had 3 children, Jennie, Steve and Tony. From 1985 – 1999, Rick and Kathy owned and operated the Northwoods Motel in Barnum. As a lifelong resident of Barnum, he dedicated himself to community service, serving on the city council, school board, community club, Volunteer Fire Department and Rod and Gun Club. An avid sportsman, Rick could often be found on the water or in the woods. His greatest joy was sharing these times with family and friends. Rick was a man who led by example. His dedication to his family, friends and community will be missed by all who knew him.

Rick is preceded in death by his parents.

Rick is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Kathleen Waseen of Barnum; 1 daughter, Jennifer (Kyle) Landwehr of Barnum; 2 sons, Steven Waseen of Barnum and Anthony Waseen of Barnum; special buddy/grandson, Kyson Landwehr; 1 brother, Darrell (Maryelyn) Waseen of Clear Lake; 1 sister, Linda (Roy) Ober of Cloquet; sister-in-law, Sandy Lee of Coon Rapids; 2 brothers-in-law, Mark (Lisa) Peterson of Indiana and Joel Peterson of Dalton; many nieces, nephews; 3 aunts, many cousins and friends.

Visitation was Wednesday, March 4, from 5-7 PM in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake and Thursday, March 5, from 12 until the 1PM Memorial Service in Barnum United Methodist Church, Barnum with Pastor Lee Kantonen officiating.
