Rita Marie Butterfield
Rita Marie Butterfield, 67, Barnum, passed away on December 31, 2011 surrounded by her family at Augustana Mercy Health Care Center, Moose Lake. Rita was born to Dewey and Marian (Brown) Pihlman on August 31, 1944 in Duluth, MN. Her family moved to Barnum in 1952 and then to Moose Lake in 1959. She graduated from Moose Lake High School in 1962. Rita married Leo Butterfield in 1964 and they made their home and raised their family in Barnum. Rita's employment included Moose Lake State Hospital, Duluth Clinic, Camp Wanakiwin, and Carlton County retiring from the latter after 30 years of employment. Rita was active in Evergreen PAC and White Pine Riders four wheeling clubs. She took pride in instructing youth ATV and snowmobile safety classes. Rita was awarded 2009 Minnesota ATV Safety Instructor of the year. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, making homemade doughnuts and sour dough pancakes. She also made sure everyone was well fed during hunting season and anytime you walked through her door. Rita loved when friends stopped by for a visit and a cup of coffee.
Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Leo in 2005; her parents: Dewey and Marian Pihlman; and a daughter-in-law: Joan.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children: RoseAnne (Dave) Anthony of Barnum and Brian (Sheila) Butterfield of Moose Lake; step sons: John (MaryAnn) of Redwood City, CA; Gary of Laramie, WY; Robert of Devils Lake, ND; and Chris of Barnum; Grandchildren: Andy (Heather), Cassie, Lindsey, Joshua, Brett (Cari), Dan, Michael, Liz (James), Katie, Ian (Sue), Tad, Freya, Leisl, Miranda (Joe), and Casey; Great Grandchildren: Kailee, Trygger, Owen, Ellie, and Aiden; Brothers: Dewey Pihlman of Grand Marias and Ted Pihlman of Moose Lake; Sister: Kathy Stokke of Moose Lake; and Special Friends: Paul and Jody Leino of Barnum and Roger Olson of Isle; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
A Gathering of family and friends was held on Friday, January 6, 2012 from 5-8 PM in the Evangelical Covenant Church, Moose Lake and continued on Saturday, January 7, 2012 from 10 AM until the 11 AM Memorial service at the church. Pastor Todd Van Zee will officiate. Private family inurnment will be held in the spring.
