Obituary

Velma Mae Knutson, 99, of Moose Lake, died Tuesday, June 15, 2010 in Mercy Hospital, Moose Lake.
She was born September 3, 1910 in Marion, Ohio to Harry and Effie (Park) Corwin. Velma graduated from Nashwauk High School in 1926 and Hibbing Jr. College in 1928. She then went on to the U of M graduating in 1930 with a B.S. in Medical Technology. Velma worked at Minneapolis General Hospital for a short time before becoming Chief Medical Technician at St. Vincent's Hospital in Montclair, NJ. Velma was a Lt. in the United States Navy where she taught Medical Technology to Navy personnel from 1944 - 1946. Velma then worked as a Medical Technologist at Hoffman La Roche in Nutley, NJ. Velma was also a certified Braillist for Ocean County, NJ for 10 years. Velma was united in marriage to Joseph Armstrong on January 25, 1958 in New Jersey. After Joseph passed away in 1969, Velma began work organizing and developing the C.L.A. School for Medical Assistants in Toms River, NJ. After Velma retired and moved to Moose Lake in 1976, the school began presenting to the outstanding student each year the "Velma Armstrong Award". Velma was united in marriage to Arthur Knutson on October 31, 1982 in Moose Lake. They moved to Texas from 1984 – 1989 before returning to Moose Lake in 1989. Velma sang in church choirs, the Oratorio Society, the Montclair A cappella Choir and the Operetta Club. She was a board member of M.L.S.H. and was instrumental in starting "Autumn Voices". Velma was a member of Carlton County Council on Aging and in 1996 she received the Carlton County Senior Volunteer of the Year Award. Velma was a member of Hope Lutheran Church of Moose Lake.

Velma is preceded in death by husbands, Joseph Armstrong and Arthur Knutson; her parents; 1 sister, Beulah Erickson; 1 brother, Harry Corwin.

Velma is survived by nieces and nephews, Peder (Barbara) Erickson, Karen (Brent) McCullough, David (Jan) Erickson, Martin Erickson, Betty Jean Dryg, Ann Marie (Bruce) Kettunen and Harry "Chucky" (Mary) Corwin; several step children and step grandchildren.
