Wally Waisanen

Wally Waisanen, 92, Moose Lake, died peacefully on Thursday, April 2, 2015 in Lighthouse of Cloquet.

She was born on August 4, 1922 in Cedar Valley Twp., St. Louis County to John and Eveliina Pentinen. Wally grew up in Hibbing and attended Hibbing High School graduating in 1940. She attended Duluth Teachers College and UMD graduating in 1965. While attending college during the WWII era, Wally worked during the summers in the mines on the Iron Range. On February 18, 1945, Wally married Lauri Waisanen in Virginia. They farmed on a dairy farm in Kettle River from 1945 until 1972 when they moved to Sand Lake. Wally also taught school for over 30 years in St. Louis and Carlton Counties. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Kettle River and later Hope Lutheran Church in Moose Lake where she taught Sunday School at both churches. Wally was also active as Librarian and led Jr. Choir at Holy Trinity as well as an Officer on the Hope Lutheran Church Board. Wally taught Bible Class at Moose Lake State Hospital for over 20 years. She was on the Carlton County Nursing Council and served on the Lutheran Brotherhood Chapter 8068 for Southern Carlton County.


Wally was preceded in death by her husband, Lauri in 2000; grandson: Brad Gentry; and sisters: Jennie Jackson, Elaine Wayne, Elma Douglas, and Mae Newville.

She will be lovingly remembered by her two sons: Gerald (Gail) Waisanen of Eugene, OR and Ross Waisanen of Minneapolis; two daughters: Audrey (Dawson) Gentry of Moose Lake and Constance Waisanen of Astoria, OR; Grandsons: Peter (Sandra) Gentry of Barnum; Lauri Waisanen of Woodbury; Michael (Liz) Rathfon of Astoria, OR; and Jesse Rathfon of Astoria, OR; Granddaughters: Allison (Keith) Herzog of Sturgeon Lake and Dannielle (Christofer) Morse of Eugene, OR; and eight great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 am until the 11 am service on Monday, April 6, 2015 in Hope Lutheran Church, Moose Lake. Wendy Hjelmberg, A.I.M. will officiate. Lee Mogen and Dawson Gentry will provide the music. Burial will be at 1:30 PM Monday, April 6, 2015 in Sunset Memorial Cemetery, Moose Lake.
