Obituary

Walter Bonk, 92, formerly of Willow River and Pine City, died Monday, February 9, 2009 in Golden Living Center, Rush City. He was born June 22, 1916 in Willow River to Anthony and Katherine (Bury) Bonk.
Walter was united in marriage to Betty Mae Lillo on October 22, 1941 in Zumbro Falls, MN.
Walter is an Army Air Corps WWII Veteran with the 15th Air Force serving as Crew Chief in the 319th Depot Repair Squadron during both the North Africa & Italy Campaigns. After the war, Walter worked in San Francisco for a couple of years. In 1948, he bought the Heber Thompson farm & milk delivery business just south of Willow River. In 1963, Walter sold his milk route & became a full time egg producer with routes to Duluth & the Iron Range. Walter retired in 1977 & spent the next 23 years wintering with Betty in AZ & TX before living full time in Pine City. Walter enjoyed restoring antique cars, especially Model A's. He was a member of the Antique Auto Club of America-Arrowhead Chapter as well as the St. Croix Valley Restorers Club. Walter drove his cars in many parades and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Walter is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Shirley Lilliberg; 4 brothers, Joe, Albin, Louis "Bud" and Frank; 3 sisters, Clara Price, Nettie Novak and Helen Aschebrock.

Walter is survived by his loving wife, Betty Bonk of Pine City; 2 sons, Dennis (Sandie) Bonk of Rock Creek and Darryl (Margie) Bonk of Castle Rock; 1 brother, Stanley Bonk of Willow River; 1 sister, Frances Fladland of Stacy; brother-in-law, Paul Aschebrock of WI; 2 grandchildren, Corey and Jason Bonk; 1 great grandchild, Sebastjan Bonk; many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was on Friday, February 13, from 10 AM until the 11 AM Memorial Service in First United Presbyterian Church, Willow River with Pastor Bonnie Del Greco officiating. Honorary Bearers were Corey, Jason, John, Jim and Jerry Bonk, David Paulson and Pete Lilliberg. Inurnment was at Sunnyside Cemetery, Willow River.
